Apart from this shot of the terminal building, I never went out of my way to take photos of RAF or civil buildings at Turnhouse, but some buildings appear in the background of some shots and now add something to the atmosphere of the time. I took the shot above in February 1980, long after the terminal had ceased to serve its original function, had gone through a period of being used as offices and was about to be demolished. Looking northwards and taken from what was the apron, it shows the building in a rather derelict state.
As the north west end of Runway 31/13 was only yards from the A9 Trunk Road, it was necessary to stop the traffic on the A9 to allow aircraft to land and take off. This shot was taken looking westwards.
These air-to-ground shots were taken in September 1987, when I managed to hitch lifts in the Forth Flyer - that once did local traffic information flights each morning.
Edinburgh Flying Club’s Nissen hut - access to which was via the RAF Main Gate and past the threshold of Runway 26 - “the short runway”.
On finals for Runway 13, over the River Almond, taken from a British United Airlines BAC 1-11. The bridge still exists, but just about all the farmland beside the wingtip is now within the airport boundary.
